With all of the press and buzz around Intuitive Eating, I thought I’d drop an episode on the Hungry podcast that offered 5 signs that it’s time to try Intuitive Eating for yourself.
Ultimately, Intuitive Eating offers you 10 principles that guide you to creating a kind, simple and nourishing relationship with food.
Here are 5 signs that it's time to try Intuitive Eating:
> You’re ready to break up with dieting. You’re done. Finished. And are fully aware that diets don’t work and have been a waste of time and energy.
> You suspect that your body can guide you to a new relationship with food (yes, you’re right!). You’re wondering if there is a simpler and easier way to nourish your body.
> You want to model a different relationship with food and your body to someone in your life. Most commonly, it’s a young girl. You don’t want them to struggle like you have.
> You want to free your mind so you can focus your precious time and energy on what’s important to you.
> You’ve been wishing (maybe even praying) for a different solution around your relationship with food, and you’re taking the hint.
I realized a few days after I taped the podcast, that I forgot to share the 6th sign.
It’s time to try Intuitive Eating for yourself if you’re resisting it. This is called resistance.
You’re saying things like:
This sounds good for other people, but not for me.
There is no way an anti-diet approach could help me stay in control around food.
Allowing myself to eat Oreos and not feel guilty isn’t healthy.
Often what we resist is what we need the most. I know that may sound counter-intuitive.
When I resist meditating in the morning by telling myself I’m too busy and it’s not a big deal if I miss a day, I know that sitting my a$$ on my meditation cushion is what I REALLY need.
Resistance tries to keep us tethered to the habits and ways of being that aren’t working for us any longer. Resistance also tries to prevent us from creating new habits that will serve us and support our growth and expansion.
Resistance can be super sneaky and convinces us that a change isn’t worth making. Think of it like a little devil on your shoulder that says, “it’s okay, don’t be bothered, it’s not a big deal, you don’t need to do that if you don’t want to, that's too hard.”
As you start to expand and grow, resistance may show up and try to bring you back to old patterns.
The good news is that all you need to do with resistance is recognize it for what it is. And step forward.
Can you relate to some of these signs? Are you noticing any others that I haven't mentioned?
